Landfill adding second storage tank

The Canton Repository

SANDY TWP - American Landfill is constructing a second 200,000-gallon storage tank to accommodate drainage from a new waste-disposal cell.

The liquid drainage, or leachate, will be pumped into the new steel storage tank at the solid-waste landfill at 7916 Chapel St. SE.

"It provides us with additional storage of leachate," said Mohammed Ali, senior engineer at the landfill. "We have to empty it frequently and take it away."

The landfill, operated by Waste Management, constructed its first leachate storage tank in 2002. American Landfill is opening a new waste-disposal burial cell of about 20 acres.

Stark County building staff approved plans Tuesday for the electrical components of the leachate storage tank. These electrical components include a pumping device.

Liquid that drains from the burial cells is gathered at a collection point and from there pumped to the storage tank.

"From there they are hauled to a (municipal) wastewater treatment plant," Ali said.
